Aranet Cloud Configuration

Configure the WET150 after installation. Start by selecting the right VWC calibration profile for your substrate.

Aranet Base Station and Aranet Cloud expose the same options. Use whichever UI you prefer. Pair the sensor to a Base Station first.

What to configure

Calibration profile

This is the main accuracy driver. Pick the profile that matches your growing medium.

Custom profile coefficients

Use this only if you have your own calibration data. Save it as a custom profile.

Hilhorst model

Pick one:

  • Hilhorst model

  • Hilhorst model (improved) (recommended). Better accuracy at low VWC.

Choosing the right calibration profile

Base Station includes six preset VWC profiles for WET150. They cover common substrates. You can also edit coefficients and save a custom profile.

Expect some unit-to-unit variation. Even on the same substrate, two sensors can fit different profiles better.

Start with the substrate family:

  • Mineral soils

  • Coir (coco peat)

  • Rock wool

Pick the 1st choice profile first. If your typical VWC sits outside the profile’s intended range, switch to the wider-range alternative. If readings look inconsistent, try the 2nd choice profile.

Validate your configuration

Do a quick sanity check after you set the profile:

  • Compare against a reference sensor installed in the same conditions.

  • Or track overall water change by weighing.

Aranet Weight Sensor (TDSPSV02) and Slab Weight Sensor (TDSPSS01) can be used as independent references.

Operating assumptions and limits

Preset profiles are designed for moderately saline nutrient solutions. Expect best results in 0–8 dS/m.

Profiles assume horizontal, side installation. Vertical (top-down) installation and higher EC can shift readings. Treat absolute values cautiously in these cases.

Notes for coco-peat substrates

Coco coir and coco peat are both derived from coconut husks. Their pith/chips/fiber ratios can vary a lot. This changes water retention.

  • Coco coir (fiber): coarser. More aeration. Less water-holding.

  • Coco peat (pith): finer. Higher water-holding. Drains slower.

Peat moss (“peat”) is different. It is decomposed plant matter. It is not related to coco peat.

VWC can differ significantly between these materials, especially above ~60% VWC.

In the example below, sensors were installed 32 mm from the bottom. Measurements used a moderately saline solution (~4 dS/m).

Key takeaways:

  • Coco peat retains more water. It shows a larger VWC range.

  • Coco coir retains less water due to coarser particles.

  • Peat moss can hold a lot of water. It can be difficult to drain.

In most cases, Soilless Media works well across coco and peat substrates.

For coco peat, the sensor can slightly overestimate VWC above ~60%. In coarse coco substrates at high saturation, actual water content can be up to 10% lower than the reported VWC.
